Understanding the clarity of moissanite

In comparison to natural diamonds (and GIA diamond clarity gradings), the clarity of a moissanite gemstone is similar to that of a VS diamond clarity grading. Tiny, needle-like inclusions invariably develop during the lab-created moissanite growth process. These inclusions can only be seen when magnified using at least a 10x loop. They're invisible to the un-aided eye. Since Charles & Colvard® moissanite is essentially lab-created using natural elements, Charles & Colvard (the sole manufacturer of moissanite) is able to control the entire process and ensure the highest quality gemstone with the greatest care in regards to "Clarity."

Charles & Colvard moissanite makes the grade

The clarity grading process of moissanite gemstones by Charles & Colvard is a strict one. Each individual jewel is examined for any inclusions by expert gemologists. If a moissanite gemstone doesn't pass Charles & Colvard's strict quality standards, it simply won't be made available for distribution.

Moissanite Clarity Grading Scale

F / Flawless

The diamond has no inclusions or blemishes of any sort under a 10x magnification when observed by an experienced grader. Please note: Truly flawless or internally flawless (F or IF on the GIA's grading scale) diamonds are extremely rare.

IF / Internally Flawless

The diamond has no inclusions when examined by an experienced grader using 10x magnification, but will have some minor blemishes.

VVS1, VVS2 / Very, Very Slightly Included

This diamond contains minute inclusions that are difficult even for an experienced grader to see under a 10x magnification.

VS1, VS2 / Very Slightly Included (moissanite clarity)

The diamond (or moissanite) contains minute inclusions (small crystals, clouds or feathers) when observed with effort under a 10x magnification. The inclusions at this level are invisible to the naked eye.

SI1, SI2 / Slightly Included

The diamond contains inclusions (clouds, included crystals, knots, cavities and feathers) that are noticeable to an experienced grader under 10x magnification.

I1, I2, I3 / Included

The diamond contains inclusions (possibly large feathers or large included crystals) that are obvious under a 10x magnification and may affect transparency and brilliance.
